Time …

… where in the hell does it go?!

Since I retired, my to-do list seems to be longer than ever and way more varied. I am learning more about Word than I ever did when I used it (almost) daily at work, various social media is starting to find its way into my life, I’m blogging, I’m trying to keep up with all of my new blogger friends, I’m doing my best to make at least one new piece of jewelry a week … the list goes on and on. And the one thing that all of my new skills have in common? They are time eaters.

Oh, and then there is feed my girls, scoop the litter boxes, feed myself, wash clothes, do the laundry, clean the house, see friends (to see if they still remember me), go outside just because it’s there, go to movies, you know … all those normal everyday things.

I sit down for “just a few minutes” to work on something and three hours later I am still knee-deep in that project and all of the others are neglected. Check email? Budget at least an hour. See what’s happening on Facebook? A good 2-3 hours later I may be ready to hit the log out button. Edit a manuscript? Check back with me tomorrow and I’ll still be completely engrossed! Write a new blog post? Well, I started this one at least an hour and a half ago, and I’m still not finished! I heard frequently before I retired that I would be so busy after retirement I wouldn’t even dream about going back to work. I now believe it! I’m swamped.

And to-do lists mean nothing. They simply provide space for me to write down more things that I need to remember to do. Unfortunately, the items at the top never seem to get crossed off … the list just gets longer and longer and longer, until finally a new sheet of paper is needed.

Everything takes so much time. It makes me realize that time is a very precious commodity. One that continues leaking away never to be seen again. Just how much multi-tasking can I do at the same time? When I was working, I was pretty darn good at juggling multiple tasks. I need to work on those skills again.

So, what suffers? Well, I was never much of a house cleaner – now I am horrendous; I have cut back litter box scooping to once a day (sorry Widget and Molly); luckily, since I don’t have to worry about “work clothes” anymore, I have enough “play clothes” that they only need to be washed once a week; and I keep up with my friends on Facebook – not the most personal, but for now it works.

But still – where in the hell does all the time go?! If you have any extra would you please send it this way! I’ll put it to really good use 🙂

Since my early retirement two years ago I have found that I have less time with more things that I want to accomplish. The only thought that comes to mind is that I no longer have a sense of urgency. Since I only answer to myself I know that I really don’t have a deadline for most things. When my dogs start to smell I bathe them and wash their beds, if I need clothes I wash them. It boggles my mind how laid back I have become when I was so high strung, regimented and a stickler for making sure everything was done and some early.

Isn’t it great to only have yourself to answer to, Stacey?! It’s not like someone won’t get paid if I don’t get it done (I used to work in IT on an HR/Payroll system). Thanks for reading!

I’m a working mom with my own business. It seems every time I turn around time has flown by. There always seem to be new things that get added to the To Do list, and I think I love the new challenges. it sounds like you have a great variety to all the projects you have on the go. I keep hoping for a couple of extra hours in the day though they never show up!

Stacey nailed it when she mentioned the words ‘laid back’. Prioritising is another word The Golfer (my DH) uses but to me that sounds more like work than retirement lol
You can still get things done just not with the urgency you did before. just be glad you woke this morning 🙂

Prioritising definitely sounds too much like work as far as I’m concerned, Cathy! I’ll just keep working my way down my to-do list and if it gets done, great … if not it will be there tomorrow. 🙂 Thanks for reading!

It was like you were living my life there, except I have to walk the dog not clean litter box. And have a husband who still expects dinner at 6 ( I’ve rediscovered my crock pot). Yes, a piece of jewelry to make, blogs to write, Facebook to follow and email to read which now includes about 15 more with blogs to read. Love it? Yes! I too was worried I wouldn’t have enough to keep from being bored. I had to retire not by choice …migraines and stress. Dr thought I was headed to a stroke on that job and after 19 1/2 years I wasn’t going to start over at 58.

Part of what’s causing the migraines is hormones. I’m on a couple of medications. Still get, not as often and have a med that knocks it out in a couple hours. My neurologists says may have to live with but at least reduced. Was getting 2 a week now 2 a month.

Reblogged this on Smorgasbord – Variety is the spice of life and commented:
An interesting post on that elusive commodity that is time. I think that it is a different measurement completely to the ‘time’ we knew as children, then in our teen years, young adulthood, middle age (where I am sticking by the way).. the beauty is that we are all on borrowed time so I am seaching around to find someone willing to lend me some other theirs… great post.

I still wonder how time slips away faster each year and I’ve been retired eight years. I please myself now and with no-one to really worry about except my cat and me, I lose myself in projects all the time. Blogging is one real time thief. 🙂 I get up as early as I did when I worked. When do I get to sleep in? 😀

I hear you. I’ve been retired eight years and am busier by the minute. I still get up the same time as during my working life. Housework can wait. Why not? I’ve only myself and my kitty to tend to. The rest can wait. This is my time finally and I fill it with all the things I love to do: volunteer, read, write, get together with friends, and blog. I can’t do FB too. It’s way too much. Can’t keep up with everything and it’s no use getting stressed. Time and life race ahead and I try to catch up. ❤ 😀 😀

I realized today that I am growing tired of FB. It seems that the same “vanity” cards are shared by different folks from one day to the next, or the same video. I can’t seem to get past level 199 in Candy Crush and I am having trouble freeing the ghost again in Witch Saga 2. I think I am going to let FB go by the wayside for awhile. That will free up some much-needed time that I should have no trouble putting to good use! And regarding housework … I figure if my cats don’t complain about those little dust bunnies, then I’m not going to worry about it. Now when the dust bunnies become the size of my cats, I may break out the broom 🙂
